Police have been called to Freeman High School, in Spokane County, Washington, after shots were fired.
Local media is reporting several people have been injured.
All other schools in the surrounding area are in lockdown.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed there has been a shooting at the school.
It is not yet clear if the gunman is still at large.
Pictures from the scene show a huge number of police cars surrounding the school building, and worried parents have begun gathering at a nearby petrol station waiting for news on their children.
Andrea Olson, a reporter for regional news channel KHQ, tweeted that there had been injurues and children were currenlty being evacuated.
