McGregor and Diaz, 29 and 32 respectively, took part in two of the most unforgettable fights in recent UFC history in 2016.

The pair’s first encounter, which headlined 196, saw Diaz, a late replacement for then-lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, shock the world by handing McGregor his first loss in the promotion via a second-round rear-naked choke.

McGregor avenged his sole UFC defeat a few months later in the main event of UFC 202, beating the youngest Diaz brother via majority decision.

Many in the MMA world are eager for McGregor’s return to the UFC to be a trilogy fight with Diaz, who hasn’t set foot inside the Octagon since losing to ‘The Notorious’.

However, the UFC brass have other plans for McGregor, who is currently on the hit list of interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.

“What we have to do is… he needs to defend that title,” president Dana White said during an appearance on FS1’s Undisputed.

“Nate’s not even in the title picture. You know… that’s a fight that shouldn’t have even been made in the first place.

“But it happened at that time and it was great, it was an amazing fight and people loved it.

“So somewhere along the line there’s a possibility for a trilogy, but right now he has to defend his title against Tony Ferguson.

“Tony Ferguson is the fight right now and is the move, if he wants to come back.”

McGregor, 21-3, hasn’t set foot inside the Octagon since claiming the lightweight title in the main event of UFC 205, a card which saw him become the first fighter in the promotion’s history to hold two titles simultaneously.
