In Sport

Callum Paterson (2), Joe Ralls and Anthony Pilkington were on target as the Bluebirds ran riot after the break.

Express Sport brought you all the action live.

90+4: PEEP! That’s it. Cardiff seal their first win in five games to climb to second. It’s a sorry state of affairs for Sunderland, they remain bottom.

90+3: GOAL! A sloppy goal that sums up Sunderland. Bruno Ecuele Manga picks up a loose ball in mdifield, plays in Yanic Wildschut, who squads the ball for Anthony Pilkington to tap home. Awful defending from the Black Cats.

85: BOOKING! Sean Morrison sees yellow for a foul on Jake Clarke-Salter.

81: SUBSTITUTIONS! Liam Feeney and Anthony Pilkington come on for Junior Hoilett and Kenneth Zohore in a double Cardiff swap.

80: GOAL! Sunderland’s defensive problems are clear for all to see. Kenneth Zohore’s free-kick rebounds off the wall to Callum Paterson in space on the left-hand side of the box and he beats Robbin Ruiter with a sweet half-volley.

78: SUBSTITUTION! Sunderland bring Callum McManaman on for Josh Maja.

69: CHANCE! Sunderland fail to clear a corner, it falls to birthday boy Sol Bamba on the penalty spot but he blazes over.

66: CLANG! Bryan Oviedo sends a free-kick into the box, Bruno Ecuele Manga slices his clearance and it hits the bar before being hacked away for a corner.

64: CHANCE! Yanic Wildschut’s first contribution sees him storm into the box, he crosses for Kenneth Zohore but Robbin Ruiter manages to block the ball.

60: SUBSTITUTION! Sunderland bring on Joel Asoro for Lynden Gooch.

59: SUBSTITUTION! Yanic Wildschut comes on for his Cardiff debut, Nathanial Mendez-Laing heads off.

55: GOAL! Cardiff break at speed and double their lead. Junior Hoilett picks up the ball after a Sunderland free-kick is cleared, he plays in Kenneth Zohore, who brushes Tyias Browning off the ball and plays in Joe Ralls to fire past Robbin Ruiter.

49: RED CARD! Sunderland midfielder Didier Ndong is heading back to the dressing room after a late tackle on Junior Hoilett, who will be lucky to avoid an ankle injury.

48: CHANCE! Cardiff have come out like a steam train and Bruno Ecuele Manga goes close with a volley from the edge of the box.

47: GOAL! …and Cardiff score from the resulting corner. Callum Paterson beats Billy Jones in the air and heads home with Robbin Ruiter in no man’s land.

46: SAVE! Callum Paterson picks up a loose ball on the edge of Sunderland’s box and volleys at goal but Robbin Ruiter pushes it wide for a corner…

46: SUBSTITUTION! Lee Cattermole replaces Marc Wilson in the heart of Sunderland’s midfield as Cardiff get us back underway.

45+2: PEEP! That’s it for the first half. I’ve got to be honest, that was pretty painful. Spare a thought for the poor fans who’ve paid to be at the Cardiff City Stadium.

42: SAVE! Sunderland give away another sloppy foul on the edge of the box, Junior Hoilett goes closer with his free-kick but Robbin Ruiter tips it wide.

Kenneth Zohore heads the ball onto the roof of the net from the resulting corner.

35: CHANCE! Tyias Browning gives away a silly free-kick on the edge of the box, Junior Hoilett lines up the free-kick but his effort flashes past the post.

23: SAVE! The ball falls perfectly to Cardiff midfielder Joe Ralls on the edge of the box, he lashes a terrific half-volley at goal but Robbin Ruiter manages to tip it wide.

19: CHANCE! A good bit of play from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing frees Junior Hoilett on the edge of the box, he plays in Joe Ralls free on the edge but the Cardiff midfielder rolls the ball straight to Robbin Ruiter.

12: CHANCE! Josh Maja holds up play well to spark a counter attack, Cardiff eventually get men behind the ball before George Honeyman fires over.

9: CHANCE! The fact both sides are playing three-at-the-back systems is allowing the defenders time to step forward.

Tyias Browning runs through Cardiff’s non-existant midfield and gets to within 25 yards of goal but he horribly skews a shot wide.

5: CHANCE! An early sighter for Cardiff as Joe Ralls whips a free-kick into the box, Sean Morrison rises highest and heads at goal but it’s an easy save for Robbin Ruiter. It doesn’t matter, though, as the linesman raises his flag.

1: PEEP! Sunderland get us underway at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Neil Warnock on Yanic Wildschut

12:15: Neil Warnock says he “would have loved” to have started Yanic Wildschut but revealed that the Cardiff loanee’s wife gave birth earlier this week so he’s had three sleepless nights.

David Prutton’s prediction

11:20: Sky Sports’ Championship expert David Prutton is predicting a win for the hosts today.

He said: “Cardiff are proof of how quickly things can change in the Sky Bet Championship, especially over the busy Christmas period.

“From being on the shoulder of Wolves just a couple of weeks ago they’re now 14 points adrift after four defeats on the spin.

“Sunderland at home represents a great opportunity for them to get back to winning ways, particularly with the Black Cats rooted to the bottom of the table.

“It will be an emotional return for Chris Coleman to the Cardiff City Stadium, but I can’t see them getting a result on Saturday.

“2-1 with Kenneth Zohore to score first.”

Welcome

11:00: Good morning and welcome to Express Sport’s live coverage of Cardiff vs Sunderland.

Chris Coleman returns to Wales for the first time since quitting The Dragons for Sunderland.

He has had a mixed start in charge of the struggling Black Cats, who head to Cardiff bottom of the Championship table.

At the other end of the table, Cardiff’s promotion charge took a hit over the festive period as they suffered four defeats in a row.

Yanic Wildschut could make his Bluebirds debut after signing on loan from Norwich earlier this week.

Midfielder Craig Bryson and winger Kadeem Harris are short of fitness while Lee Peltier, Matthew Connolly and Aron Gunnarsson remain long-term absentees.

Chelsea loanee Jake Clarke-Salter could make his first appearance for Sunderland but Aiden McGady, Didier Ndong and Darron Gibson will miss out.

We will have team news at 11:30 with the game set to get underway at 12:30.
