The German defender joined Arsenal from Valencia in 2016 as Wenger looked to bolster his defensive options.
He has struggled with injuries since his move to the Emirates and has played just 12 Premier League matches this season.
But he started for the Gunners last night in the 2-2 draw against Chelsea last night, playing in a back three alongside youngsters Rob Holding and Calum Chambers.
And Liverpool legend Carragher was far from impressed with Mustafi’s display and is yet to be convinced he is the answer to Arsenal’s problems at the back.
“Mustafi, to be honest, I don’t think was great at helping two young lads around him,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“It’s not just about having young players there, I don’t think Mustafi is good enough really.”
Laurent Koscielny, often occupying the club captaincy with Per Mertesacker not playing, also came in for criticism from Carragher.
“Koscielny, who I thought was brilliant, has seemed to have fallen off a cliff in these last 18 months, in his performance. Maybe it’s injuries?” He added.
“You can never be confident with Arsenal defensively and at times I felt Chelsea should have gone for them a little bit more.”
Arsenal return to action on Sunday (4pm) when they face Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup third round.
