Pickford last week became England’s most expensive goalkeeper of all time, signing for Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals Everton from Sunderland for £30million.

Kirkland, who made 25 Premier League appearances for the Reds between 2001 and 2006, was in the same squad as Pickford when the youngster had a loan spell with Preston in 2015.

He says the 23-year-old is one of the best he has seen and is almost certain to be England’s No.1 goalkeeper for many years.

“Coming back to Jordan, he is something special,” Kirkland said on Sky Sports.

“I worked with him at Preston, absolutely (he is worth £30million).

“I told Liverpool to sign him 18 months ago, they could have got him for a lot less then.

“He’s the best I’ve worked, he’s a very confident lad.

“I didn’t see a weakness in his game, sometimes with goalkeepers they are struggling with one area of their game but this lad has got the lot.

“His distribution is second to none, he makes the saves which keepers should.

“He’s commanding in his box, he’s the best I’ve seen. I’d be very surprised if Jordan isn’t the England No.1 for many years to come, he’s got the lot.

“If it didn’t happen it would have to be through injuries, which hopefully it doesn’t happen.”
