*SPOILER WARNING FOR X-MEN MOVIES*
Filming is now underway for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the fourth film in the prequel series of X-Men movies, following directly on from 2016’s X-Men Apocalypse.
Like its predecessor, the new film is in the alternate X-Men timeline, changed by Wolverine in X-Men: Days of Future Past – If you’re confused, click here.
X-Men: Apocalypse was set in 1983, so what about Dark Phoenix? Well following the prequel films’ fashion, the new movie will be set another decade forward in the 1990s – 1991 to be precise.
The first set photo from X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been revealed, showing the exteriors of Professor X’s Danger Room – where the X-Men are trained.
Series regulars James McAvoy (Professor Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Nicholas Hoult (Beast) and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey) are all returning.
But this time the focus is on the latter actress, whose character is also known as Phoenix.
In the comics, the narrative follows Jean’s corruption and downfall, as an exceptionally powerful mutant.
Fans may remember that X-Men: The Last Stand – set in 2006 – followed this storyline somewhat.
However since Dark Phoenix is set in an alternate timeline, this aspect of Jean’s arc is now taking place earlier in 1991.
How it will differ is still something of a mystery, so fans will have to wait for the for the first trailer later this year.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is released on November 2, 2018.
